Grind versus story in mobile RPGs

Grind versus story in mobile RPGs

March 27, 2026 · Lukas Vogel

A lot of mobile RPGs try to keep you around with numbers going up. Level ups, gear tiers, timers. It works for a while, but it rarely leaves a lasting memory. Emberfall Saga went a different way, and it stuck with us.

The trick is that its combat is engaging enough that you don't notice you're progressing. You keep playing because the next fight is a puzzle and the next scene is a payoff, not because a bar is almost full.

We're not against systems. Good RPGs need progression. The question is whether that progression serves the story or replaces it. When a game leans entirely on grind, we usually drop it within a few days.

Our takeaway for players: judge an RPG by whether you're curious about what happens next, not just what unlocks next. That curiosity is the thing worth chasing.
